A Humble Servant

As you all have probably guessed, we are home! We have worked for the last couple of weeks on getting back to our schedule, and all the details that follow getting back home. Though we miss the times in Arizona, it is wonderful to be home! Since we have been here, we have enjoyed fellowship through our church family, Bible study group, dinner guests, and overnight guests. We are so blessed!

Recently, the Lord has been teaching me about humbling myself and being a servant to others. This is certainly not an easy thing for me, as I struggle with pride, and willingness to serve others when I want to be doing something for myself. But, through His grace, I pray that I will be a humble servant to others! Sometimes, it may seem as if serving a family member may be a small thing, but truly, it is important in God's eyes. "And whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. " ~Matthew 10:42

Pride is such a big thing- it manifests itself in so many ways. I think that often times, the root of a lot of sin is pride! But the Lord works most through those who are humble- that is what He desires for His people. Proverbs 29:23 says, "A man's pride shall bring him low: but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit. " There are so many verses on pride and humility... I am always convicted when I read them! Jesus said in Matthew 18:4, "Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven." Galatians 5:13 talks about serving others in love. "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another."

Another aspect of serving others is our motives. Sometimes I think about something that I want to do for someone, then have to evaluate why I want to do it. Am I doing it for the praise or admiration of men, or for the glory of God, and t0 bless others?

I am so thankful for hymns! I thought the words to this hymn are expressed well:

Give of your best to the Master, Give of the strength of your youth;
Throw your soul's fresh, glowing ardor Into the battle for truth.
Jesus has set the example- Dauntless was He, young and brave;
Give Him your loyal devotion, Give Him the best that you have.

Give of your best to the Master, Give Him first place in your heart;
Give Him first place in your service, Consecrate ev'ry part.
Give and to you shall be given- God His beloved Son gave;
Gratefully seeking to serve Him, Give Him the best that you have.

Give of your best to the Master, Nought else is worthy His love;
He gave Himself for your ransom, Gave up His glory above:
Laid down His life without murmur, You from sin's ruin to save;
Give Him your heart's adoration, Give Him the best that you have.

Refrain:
Give of your best to the Master, Give of the strength of your youth;
Clad in salvation's full armor, Join in the battle for truth.

May the Lord bless you all as you serve Him!

  4. Excellent post, Amanda!
    I agree completely-pride is definately the root of many character flaws!
    The hymn you shared is beautiful-I like how it mentioned Jesus using all of His youth for His Father's work! He did set a wonderful example, and knowone was or will be as brave again! I want to try to find this hymn in one of our hymn books.
    I look forward to hearing from you, and seeing your next blog-post!
    Love,
    Ashley
